This beautiful antique map of the iberian peninsula, dating back to the 17th century, depicts the geographical regions of Spain, including Portugal, Galicia, Castile and Léon, Andalusia, Granada, Catalonia, Navarre, Aragon, Valencia, Murcia, and the Balearic Islands (Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, and Formentera). The illustration is adorned with sailing ships, a compass rose, a decorative cartouche, and a coat of arms.
Originally conceived by Hessel Gerritsz and engraved by Henricus Hondius, the map's initial state was first published in 1631, replacing the earlier Mercator-Hondius map of Spain from around 1606. The version presented here is an early first state from the French edition of the Mercator-Hondius Atlas printed in 1633.
