Rare map of the Azores (Ilhas dos Açores) by Benedetto Bordone. Showing the Portuguese Atlantic islands of the Azores with the two mythical islands Brasil and Asmaide. On verso a map of Cadiz. Two woodcut maps on one sheet.
The island Brasil, also known as Hy Brasil was a phantom island, which is supposedly located west of Ireland in the Atlantic Ocean. Irish myths say that the island is always hidden, shrouded in fog and difficult to access. Only every seven years the island is visible for one day.
From Libro di Benedetto Bordone... de tutte l'isole del mondo..., more commonly known as Isolario of Bordone, which first appeared in Venice in 1528. Three further editions followed in 1534, 1547 and 1565. The maps of all four editions were printed from the same woodblocks in Venice.
