Description

First edition of the very decorative nautical chart of the Islands of Bermuda by Hendrick Hondius. Shows the Bermuda Islands with Grand Bermuda, Somerset Island and Saint George's Island. Decorated with three beautiful cartouches, loxodromes and a compass rose. Below a detailed index of the property owners.

Based on John Norwood's survey of 1618, first published by John Speed in 1626. This is the first edition of the plate by H. Hondius from his Atlas Ou Representation Du Monde. This example is the from the French edition of the 1633 atlas, in which this Bermuda map was published the first time. In 1647 the map was published again by Janssonius with an altered title cartouche, around 1700 once again by Valk & Schenk.

Cartographer

Jodocus Hondius was born 1563 in Wakken (West Flanders). He became a globe maker and map engraver. In 1593 he set up his business in Amsterdam after he spent several years in London. He was one of the most important engravers of his time and engraved maps for van den Keere, Waghenaer and Speed. Hondius bought the plates of Mercator in 1604, added around 40 maps and published the expanded Mercator-Atlas first 1606 still under Mercator's name. After his death 1612 in Amsterdam, the business was carried out by his sons Jodocus II and Henricus.
