Old coloured title page of the Hondius-Janssonius Atlas. From the Latin edition of the Atlas Novus published 1638 in Amsterdam.

Pieter van der Krogt in Koeman's Atlantes Neerlandici, 1:32:

Architectural title page, surmounted by a sphere and allegorical representations of geography and astronomy. The text panel is flanked by allegorical figures for the continents. The title panel is left blank, some titles were printed with a separate copperplate, others we pasted in the blank space. The imprint is engraved on the plate, and occasionally pasted-over with a different imprint. This title page is based on Blaeu's appendix.

Condition

A vertical crease, right side backed, somewhat browned and partly stained at margins. Beautiful old colours.

Cartographer

Johannes Janssonius also known as Jan Jansson was born 1588 in Arnhem, Netherlands. His father was a bookseller and publisher (Jan Janszoon the Elder). When he married the daughter of the cartographer Jodocus Hondius he also set up a business as book publisher in Amsterdam. His first map was published in 1616. Around 15 years later he set up a partnership with his brother in law Hondius add issued further editions of the Mercator/Hondius atlas. After his death in 1664, his heirs still have published several maps. Many of his plates have been acquired by Pieter Schenk and Gerard Valk.
