Description
Old coloured antique map of Upper and Lower Austria by J. Janssonius. Showing Upper Austria with the border area to Bavaria with Passau and Lower Austria with the west of Slovakia and Hungary. In the centre the Danube from Haibach, Linz, Steyr, Enns, via Vienna to Hainburg and Bratislava (Pressburg). With the towns of St. Pölten, Klosterneuburg, Baden, Krems, Amstetten, Mödling, Traiskirchen, Schwechat, Stockerau, Tulln, Perchtoldsdorf, Ternitz, Korneuburg, Neunkirchen, smaller towns are also named. Attersee, Traunsee and Wolfgangsee to the bottom left, Burgenland with Lake Neusiedl to the east. Decorated with three cartouches and several coats of arms. The map is based on the 16th century map of Austria by the Austrian humanist and historian Wolfgang Lazius.
Cartographer
Johannes Janssonius also known as Jan Jansson was born 1588 in Arnhem, Netherlands. His father was a bookseller and publisher (Jan Janszoon the Elder). When he married the daughter of the cartographer Jodocus Hondius he also set up a business as book publisher in Amsterdam. His first map was published in 1616. Around 15 years later he set up a partnership with his brother in law Hondius add issued further editions of the Mercator/Hondius atlas. After his death in 1664, his heirs still have published several maps. Many of his plates have been acquired by Pieter Schenk and Gerard Valk.
