Description

Old coloured title page of the "Water World", the Maritim Atlas of J. Janssonius, first edition, fully high-lighted in gold. The fifth part of the Latin edition of the Atlas Novus published 1650 in Amsterdam.

This page consists of three parts. At the top are scenes from the Old Testament: Moses holds the tables with the ten commandments, while at his side is Aaron the high priest. Incidents from Exodus are portrayed within the background landscape. In the centre is a text panel flanked by two Roman figures. At the bottom is an emperor (Ferdinand III ?) with nautical scenes on both sides. The title panel is blank; the engraved imprint is dated 1650, later altered to 1652, 1657, and finally 1700.

Cartographer

Johannes Janssonius also known as Jan Jansson was born 1588 in Arnhem, Netherlands. His father was a bookseller and publisher (Jan Janszoon the Elder). When he married the daughter of the cartographer Jodocus Hondius he also set up a business as book publisher in Amsterdam. His first map was published in 1616. Around 15 years later he set up a partnership with his brother in law Hondius add issued further editions of the Mercator/Hondius atlas. After his death in 1664, his heirs still have published several maps. Many of his plates have been acquired by Pieter Schenk and Gerard Valk.
