Description
Two Stunning Manuscript Chart of the Wadden Sea
Decorative manuscript chart of the shoals and sandbanks at the Eems estuary and surrounding the Wadden Sea islands Rottumeroog, Borkum and Juist (Rottum, Borkum and Just on the map). Pen and ink and wash colour, on heavy paper.
Showing the shoals and indicating the water depths. It also depicts Delfzijl and Emden, several smaller towns such as Uithuizen, Appingedam and Greetsiel (Greetzijl), and 't Huis on Rottum. The towns are symbolized by houses or churches. Two paragraphs of text give further information on the water depths and on the (erroneous) depiction of the several shoals. With two figural compass roses, rhumb lines and a mileage scale.
Together with a slightly variant, uncoloured, manuscript copy of this chart, giving much more detailed information on the water depths, mainly in the waterways around Borkum. Brown ink. (Paper size: 55,3 x 43 cm)
Condition
Closed tear in upper (mainly blank) margin. Small stain at lower right of image.
