Old colored map of the English Channel by Georg Matthäus Seutter, published by Tobias Lotter in Augsburg. Shows the south coast of England, the Isle of Wight, and the north coast of Normandy.
This detailed map from around 1730 shows southeast England, including London and the course of the Thames, from Gloucester and Salisbury to the canals and from Oxfordshire to the Isle of Wight. The Normandy coast is depicted from Calais to Havre de Grace. Seutter combines elements of nautical charts and conventional maps, with depth information and shading to indicate underwater hazards in the English Channel. The North Sea and the Strait of Dover are also included. In the lower center is an elaborate allegorical cartouche decorated with maritime scenes, castles, a merchant, a swarm of bees, and mythological figures, including Neptune and Hermes.
The cartouche depicts Greek gods such as Poseidon and Hermes, as well as merchants, bees, and merchant ships. This map first appeared in various Seutter atlases in the 1730s. This copy is particularly vivid, suggesting that it is an early print. The plate was later revised and reused by Seutter's successor, T. C. Lotter, in the 1770s.
