Hand-coloured engraved sea chart of Brazil by A. Montanus. From De Nieuwe en onbekende weereld: of Beschryving van America en 't zuid-land published 1671 in Amsterdam. Decorated with two cartouches surrounded by allegorical figures and putti, galleons, rhumb lines and two compass roses.

Condition

Cartographer

Arnoldus Montanus was a Dutch theologian and historian. Montanus wrote works on Church history, theology, the history of the Netherlands and the peoples and cultures of the New World. Although he has never left Europe, his works had a great influence on Western perceptions of the countries concerned.
