Bowen's maps of Bermuda and St. Kitts from 'A Complete System of Geography'. Two maps on one sheet printed from one plate. The Bermuda island is placed vertical, giving an impression of a fishhook. St. Kitts looks like a fishing weight, seems Bowen enjoyed fishing while combining these two maps.
Each map is decorated with a compass rose and a title cartouche and comes with extensive details and annotations. A long note on the Bermuda map describes the location and sailing approach to Bermuda. Also Shipwrecks of rich Spanish ships are mentioned.
Evidence of two old vertical folds, minor toning along centrefold. Very good conditions.
Emanuel Bowen was a printer, publisher and map engraver in London during the mid-eighteenth century. From 1714 onwards he worked in London and began to produce some of the finest and most attractive maps of the century.
