Description

Important Manuscript Map of the Swabian Alb on Parchment.

Very large, impressive, and detailed manuscript map of the Swabian Alb. The map, drawn on parchment, depicts the dominions of Schülzburg, Erbstetten, Granheim, and Anhausen. The property of Baron Josef Tiber Speth von und zu Schülzburg is outlined in red/yellow, while the fief is bordered in black/yellow. The castles, villages, forests, and castle ruins are largely depicted in accordance with reality. Shown are the villages along the river Lauter in the Lauter Valley, including Gundelfingen, Indelhausen, Anhausen, the distinctive Schülzburg, and Unterwilzingen. To the southwest, the map extends to Oberwilzingen, while north of the Lauter, it includes Erbstetten, Mundingen, Granheim, Dürrenstetten, Frankenhofen, and Dächingen.

According to the description in the cartouche, the impressive hand-drawn map is based on a larger, older map that no longer exists and was drawn by Father Nicolaus Beckh of Willmedingen. A slightly older map, drawn on paper and also based on this lost map, is also in our possession and can be accessed under the article number 12985.

In the top left corner, the coat of arms of Baron Josef Tiber von und zu Schülzburg, Lord of Granheim, Erbstetten, and Anhausen. In the top right corner, the coat of arms of Maria Anna Theresia Spethin von Schülzburg, née Schenck, Countess of Castell. In the bottom right corner, a cartouche with the title and description. To the left of the cartouche, the names and coats of arms of Württemberg, Austria, Messkirch, Zwiefalten, Ehingen, and Marchtal.
