Description

The first and one of the most beautiful engravings of Maria Sibylla Merian's Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium. Merian combines the most enchanting and the most repulsive on one sheet. She made this the first plate of the Metamorphosis, considering the pineapples to be the most outstanding of all edible fruits, cockroaches the most notorious of all insects. It shows the pineapple in flower, accompanied by the cockroaches that fascinated Merian as much as the exotic plant. Engraved by Joseph Mulder.
