This finely hand-colored copper engraving was published around 1760 by Tobias Conrad Lotter, one of the foremost Augsburg map publishers of the 18th century. It depicts the County of Zeeland with the estuary of the Scheldt, extending from Vlissingen and Middelburg to Bergen op Zoom and Sandvliet.
The map highlights Zeeland’s distinctive landscape of islands, peninsulas, and waterways. The careful rendering of towns, ports, and river mouths underscores the strategic and economic importance of the region, particularly with regard to maritime trade via the Scheldt and the North Sea. Lotter’s work combines the cartographic precision of the period with the artistic flourish of baroque mapmaking, further enhanced by the original hand-coloring.
