Description
Bowen's map of Asia. From 'A Complete System of Geography'. With the mythical De Gama's Land, east of Japan, with the note 'This coast was discover'd by John de Gama in a Voyage from China to New Spain.'De Gama land seems to be a part of the pre-history of the Northeast Coast of America, which would soon be laid to rest by the voyages of Bering, Cook and others in the region. Decorated with a compass rose and a nice title cartouche.
Condition
Centrefold in lower half backed, tear right to the centrefold backed. Small tears in lower margin backed. A good copy.
Cartographer
Emanuel Bowen was a printer, publisher and map engraver in London during the mid-eighteenth century. From 1714 onwards he worked in London and began to produce some of the finest and most attractive maps of the century.
