Description

Very rare copper engraved Africa Map of G. Botero. This example has a thin engraved line around the continent, which is not described in references. It seems the map comes from 1640 edition of "Relationi Universali" since Burden describes an equal line in an America map of Botero from this edition (Burden, North America 86 & 149). Showing one seamonster.

Cartographer

Giovanni Botero, an Italian philosopher, pries and thinker, was born around 1540 in Bene, Piermont. His cartographic achievements results a world map in 1591 and maps of each continent and the British Isles published first 1596 in his Relationi Universali. Several editions followed until 1662. Er died 1617 in Turino.
