| Untitled trapezoidal Ptolemaic woodcut map of the Balkan. From the 1541 Vienne (Dauphiné) edition of Ptolemy's Geographia published by Gaspar Trechsel and sold by Hughes de la Porte in Lyons. The maps are cut by Laurence Fries, first published in the 1522 Strasbourg edition. Showing south east Europe from Adriatic Sea to Black Sea. This includes today Albania, Macedonia, North of Greece and the Bosporus / Turkey around Istanbul. |
| Good strong impression in beautiful original colour. Some browning, repairs on centrefold. Overall very good condition. |
| About the Cartograph/ Printer: Laurent Fries was a French physician and mathematician born around 1485 in Mulhouse. He settled finally in Strassburg where he meat Peter Apian and the publisher Johannes Grüninger which made him interested in the Ptolemy Atlas of 1513 and 1520. Fries made new woodcut maps in reduced size. His Ptolemy Atlas was published first in 1522, reissued in 1525, 1535 and 1541. He died in 1532. |
