Decorative coloured 16th century map of the central part of Africa with a dedicated cartouche to the legendary Prester John. The myth of Prester John was popular in Europe from 12th to 17th century. The map showing him on a throne in today Sudan. From "Geographisch Handtbuch" of M. Quad by J. Bussemacher.
Centrefold backed with Japan paper, Latin manuscript notes by old hand on right margin, excellent conditions.
About the  Cartograph/ Printer:  Matthias Quad, born in 1557, was a German cartographer active during the late 16th century in Cologne. His main geographical works "Europae totius orbis terrarum" and "Geographisch Handtbuch" were published and engraved by Johann Bussemacher. He died in 1613.
